1. What about other domain name combinations (tresselmustgo.com, etc.)?

There are many possible domains that could be used to request a coach be fired. The reason that I locked up FireJimTressel.com is that "Fire(Firstname)(Lastname).com" has become something of an online standard for fire-the-coach web sites.

At the time of this writing, the following web sites exist and argue for the firing of the head coach:

About 20 additional "Fire(Firstname)(Lastname).com" combinations are registered for various I-A head football coaches, but do not (yet) have web sites behind those domains (see this USEnet article for a complete list, as of October 2003).

I'm only aware of two web sites -- JoePaMustGo.com (Penn State) and CoachPMustGo.com (Syracuse) -- that do not fit the pattern.

I can't keep someone from registering "firejimtressel12345.com", but I can keep people from easily finding such a site by holding onto the most obvious name.

2. How brave is it to put up this site now?

Believe it or not, there are still people arguing for Jim Tressel to be replaced -- or arguing that he cannot get the job done and just got lucky last year, and therefore will necessarily be replaced eventually. Up until last year, there was a "fire Tressel" web site in existence, run by an infamous Ohio State "fan." Also, a local (Columbus) radio personality is still pretty persistent in his suggesting that Tressel is not the man for Ohio State.

Some Ohio State fans are dissatisfied with the lack of offensive production in 2003. That is a legitimate concern, to be sure. But it seems unlikely to me that the coaching staff are all idiots lost in the dark, and more likely that they are aware of the problem and doing their best to win games.

Over the last dozen years (1991-2002 inclusive), Jim Tressel's teams have been involved in seven title games (mostly at I-AA Youngstown State), and won five of them. He has gone to the title game more than half of the time, and won more than 2/3 of those trips, over a span of more than a decade. That is an outstanding record.

3. What about media exposure?

Unlike other "real" fire-the-coach web sites, I don't make money selling merchandise, and I don't even have banner ads -- I'm just occupying the domain name with a simple raspberry directed at those who would use it for such a purpose. There is no benefit to driving traffic to this site. For that reason, I've never gone looking for media exposure: I have never advertised or promoted this site, and do not intend to do so in the future.

The site was found, by word-of-mouth, by Cleveland Plain Dealer reporter John Campanelli, who interviewed me and wrote an article about it.
